Cow Art and More Where art and agriculture meet

Laura Carey

Laura Carey was born and raised in Ontario Canada. An only child growing up, she had a great imagination. "Not having siblings to bounce things off I fostered my natural problem solving abilities," says Laura.  "I spent my hours in my own world creating." Then, as now, Laura observed her surroundings as a painting, shapes, shades and textures. She was always drawing and painting, in every media possible.

Laura spent most of high school in the art room and received the grade twelve Art Award. She studied Designed Arts in college.  Before her life took a different path, she met and married her husband of 23 years.  Laura settled in to her new role of wife, mother, and dairy farmer on their 300 acre farm. Laura explains, "I love cows, or my gurls as I call them. Each cow has her own personality, some calm and steady, some hyper, some friendly, some stubborn and yes, the odd brat~!!"  Laura enjoys milking time where she gets to interact with them. She often spends any free time in the pasture photographing them as well. "I may take fifty pictures in order to find just the right one to paint. Often laying on the ground, and waiting until their curiously gets the best of them and I get a great shot."  As Laura goes on to explain, "They are super nosey, and most can't resist checking out anything new."

Laura had dreams in high school of someday being a famous artist and having a little farm. "While I am more than okay with never being famous, I am overjoyed at the fact that I can combine my love of cows, and my passion of art to create."  Laura has been professionally selling her paintings for over seven years and has sold hundreds of paintings.

Artist Statement:

They say that we are born with the skills and gifts we will need to live our lives~ I believe this to be true~ Thankfully I need only basic math skills to survive my day to day life~ lol I knew from a very young age that art was going to be a strong influence in my life~ I was always doodling, drawing and creating. My high school years were spent in the art room. I went to college for Design Arts.

And then life took a different path. I married a dairy farmer, and started a family. Years later, I began to paint again.

My favorite subject is the animals I have been caring for the past 23 years, my girls as I call them. Each cow has a different personality. Some are calm, and steady, some curious, some gentle, and well,.. the odd brat ~ I strive to capture each animals unique personality ,and bring it to life in my colorful paintings~ Art is my passion...some days it borders on obsession, as I am constantly dreaming, planning or executing my newest idea~ I visualize everything around me as my next painting. My style has been called whimsical, Impressionistic, and folk.

I consider myself very fortunate to combine my two life long passions to create my cow paintings~ There is nothing I would rather be doing~
